While the BACB first introduced these changes in 2022, the 2027 updates to BCBA eligibility requirements are now approaching implementation. Beginning January 1, 2027, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) will roll out significant updates impacting BCBA and BCaBA certification pathways, coursework structure, and supervised fieldwork requirements.
These changes represent a meaningful shift in how future behavior analysts will be trained and certified. For current and future trainees, supervisors, and ABA organizations, understanding these updates is essential for planning coursework, fieldwork, and career timelines.
Below is a clear breakdown of what is changing and what it means in practice.
What's Changing to BCBA Eligibility in 2027?
Let’s get right to it—what exactly is changing? We’ll break it down by each component of eligibility.
2027 Eligibility Pathways
Starting in 2027, there will only be two eligibility pathways:
Pathway 1: Master's degree from an APBA-accredited program or an ABAI-accredited or recognized program
Pathway 2: Master's degree or higher in any discipline from a qualifying educational institution+ a sequence of behavior-analytic coursework
What's the difference? With Pathway 1, you're earning a degree in behavior analysis, so your coursework is already designed to meet BACB requirements as part of an integrated curriculum. With Pathway 2, you can earn a degree in another discipline and take the additional coursework to meet the requirements without obtaining an additional full master's degree.
Looking ahead, in 2032, Pathway 1 will be the only route to BCBA certification. The BACB has communicated that in 2032, eligibility will require completion of a graduate-level behavior-analytic degree program.
Important:
Your coursework must have been completed in the last 10 years
You must pass with a C or higher in each course
Your coursework cannot take less than one calendar year
Coursework
Several changes are going into effect for Pathway 2 coursework. The BACB recommends meeting with your program advisor to review your completed and in-progress coursework and confirm the number of content hours covered in each course to ensure you are aligned with the 2027 requirements.
The 2027 coursework requirements include:
Basic Principles of Behavior: 45 hours, 1 course
Theory & Philosophy in Behavior Analysis: 45 hours, 1 course
Research Methods in Behavior Analysis: 45 hours, 1 course
Behavior Assessment & Intervention: 90 hours, 2 courses
Organizational Behavior Management: 45 hours, 1 course
Ethics: 45 hours, 1 course
Under the updated standards, several content areas that may have previously been combined into broader courses are now separated into more clearly defined, freestanding courses.
2027 Fieldwork Requirements
There are several updates to BCBA fieldwork requirements that trainees and supervisors should be aware of, particularly related to supervision structure, monthly expectations, and documentation requirements.
Key changes include:
Concentrated supervision requirement decreased to 7.5% of total fieldwork hours (previously 10%)
Monthly supervision structure updated: requirements are now based on minimum time requirements rather than a fixed number of contacts
Maximum monthly fieldwork hours increased to 160 hours
Supervised Fieldwork | Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork | |
|---|---|---|
Total Hours Needed | 2,000 | 1,500 |
Supervision Hours (Per Month) | 5% of total hours | 7.5% of total hours |
Observations with a trainee (Per Month) | 60 minutes (cumulative) | 90 minutes (cumulative) |
Total Fieldwork Hours (Per Month) | 20-160 | |
Unrestricted Activities | At least 60% of your TOTAL hours must be unrestricted | |
Individual Supervision | At least 50% of monthly supervision must be individual | |

Maintaining BCBA Certification
There's a minor update to certification maintenance requirements beginning in 2027. BCBAs who provide supervision will be required to complete 4 supervision-related CEUs per 2-year renewal cycle.
2027 CEU Requirements:
32 Total CEUs per 2-year cycle, including:
4 in Ethics
4 in Supervision (if you provide supervision)
While the BACB eliminated the formal DEI requirement, we encourage providers to seek out continuing education on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in behavior analysis.
Keep Up With BACB Updates
It's important to stay on top of upcoming BACB changes. They usually provide a few years' notice when standards are changing. You can view upcoming changes here.

Why These Changes Matter—and Who They Impact
Updates to BACB requirements don’t exist in isolation. They directly affect how people enter the field, how they complete certification, and how supervisors and organizations structure training and supervision.
For Trainees
For trainees actively working toward certification, these changes matter most in a very practical way: timing and eligibility alignment.
If you are currently collecting coursework or fieldwork hours, your certification path depends heavily on when you apply. The 2027 updates introduce new coursework structures and eligibility pathways, which means trainees need to be aware of whether they will fall under the current or updated requirements.
Planning ahead now will save you a headache later on. If you won't be applying until 2027 or later, it’s important to review the following:
Whether your coursework aligns with 2027 requirements
Whether the fieldwork hours you've completed thus far meet the updated 2027 standards
Whether you're using the correct and current verification forms
If you have completed one component, such as coursework, but are still in progress on another, such as fieldwork hours, this is a key time to reassess your timeline and ensure everything remains aligned with your intended application date.
For Future Trainees
If you're exploring a career in applied behavior analysis further down the line, it's important to be mindful of how certification pathways are evolving over time. With the BACB indicating a long-term shift toward a single pathway, those who plan to apply for BCBA certification in 2032 or later must have earned a degree from an APBA-accredited program or ABAI-accredited or recognized program.
For Supervisors & Organizational Leaders
BCBA supervisors are expected to remain current with BACB requirements in order to effectively support trainees through their fieldwork experience.
These updates may impact how supervision is structured and documented. If you have not already, now is a good time to review these changes with your team and identify whether any adjustments are needed in your current fieldwork systems or supervision processes.
Key Takeaways
The 2027 BACB updates reflect a broader shift toward more structured, standardized, and clearly defined pathways for becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
While the total requirements are not drastically changing, the way those requirements are organized, completed, and documented is becoming more specific.
The most important things to remember are:
Eligibility pathways 3 and 4 are eliminated
Coursework is being reorganized into distinct, freestanding content areas
You can accrue up to 160 fieldwork hours/month
The timing of your exam application will play a critical role in which requirements apply to you
What to Do Next
If you are currently in training or supporting trainees, now is the time to take a proactive approach:
Confirm which eligibility pathway applies to your timeline
Review your completed coursework against the 2027 structure
Ensure your fieldwork hours are being tracked under the correct standards
Verify that you're using updated BACB forms and documentation systems
Discuss upcoming changes with your supervisor or training team
Planning ahead now will make transitions into the 2027 requirements significantly smoother and reduce the risk of needing to revisit completed elements later.
