On October 7th, 2025, the ABA Coding Coalition announced upcoming changes to CPT codes. While the full details remain confidential until official publication, the approval signals important updates that will impact how ABA clinicians render services, document, and bill payors. Let’s explore what we know so far.
What Are CPT Codes?
Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes provide a standardized system for describing services for coding, reporting, and billing. In ABA, each CPT code defines a specific service, who can provide it, the mode of delivery, and the billing units. For example, the CPT code 97151, Adaptive Behavior Assessment, can be billed by a physician or other qualified health care professional (e.g., BCBA) for time spent face-to-face administering assessments and discussing findings, as well as non-face-to-face time analyzing assessment data and preparing the treatment plan.
What’s Changing to ABA CPT Codes?
The American Medical Association (AMA) approved several changes to CPT codes that will take effect January 1, 2027. We won’t know the exact changes until late 2026, as they’re currently held confidential. However, we do know that the following changes were approved:
6 new CPT codes
Revisions to codes 97151-97158
Revisions to guidelines around the usage of the code set
Removal of existing T codes
What Does This All Mean?
It’s hard to say exactly what this will look like for ABA providers, billers, and payors. However, it’s reasonable to assume these changes will be meaningful to the field. With new codes being added, revisions to existing codes, and updated guidelines, clinics will likely see significant changes in how services are billed and documented.
Keep an eye out for updates toward the end of 2026 to ensure you have enough time to prepare before the changes go live.
